March & April 1939 from The Calls 1935-1943

March 19. I wrote "Edith took Charles to Dr Knoll, Le Roy He says there are three essentials for him, rest, digitalis, and drinking very little, not more than a quart of liquid a day, the liquid contributing to shortness of breath. He reads a great deal, the two dailys, Magazines and library books. Then he always has lots of figuring. He goes to Akron occasionally, and to the Pembroke Farm. He is changing tenants. Wood goes to the Schwab farm, and Leonis Williams, who has been working for Irving and lived in the Court house, goes to Maple Square. Charles also sorts, cleans and picks the eggs. There are now 90 a day."

"Robert's folks have had a hard winter. Richard has been in the hospital twice. The last time he had a piece of his rib cut out and drainage tubes inserted. The rest of the family has been sick also."

Fri 24. Was "the first spring like day" after a winter of "high destructrive winds, ice, rain, lots of snow."

Sun 26. All three of Irving's children have whooping cough, but have had serum, and Louisa seems practically over it.

Mr and Mrs Tibbetts are at the Blocker Home for old people, at Williamsville.

Fri 31. We had a birthday dinner for Charles, in honor of his 80th birthday. We had Carrie and Frank, Mr and Mrs O.C. Curtis, Aikens, Gilbert Prole. Mr Torrey was sick and they couldn't come. Thelma was caterer, bought and prepared all the food, and she and Edith served it. A very nice dinner, fruit cup, baked oysters, creamed potatoes, scalloped parsnips with cheese, salad, cheese wafers, olives, cucumbers, celery, sweet apple pickles, Birthday cake, nuts and mints. It was funny, after diner, the five men sat down by themselves, and the women visited by themselves. I felt it was a very successful party.

Sat April 8. The children, Eileen and Alden, home for Easter vacation. I was surprised by a call from an old school mate from Geneseo whom I have not seen or hardly heard of for nearly 60 years. She is an aunt of Beverly Whittmore who attends to Edith's business at Royal Oak.

Apr 22. E.F. and Sarah returned from Florida. Edith took him to Rochester where he went to see the Manager of the Chase Nursery Co. He told the Chase man he would not work for the amount named in the Contract. The manager said they paid no one any more. he went to join Edith and in a very few minutes the manager followed him, said he was pleased with his references, and would pay what he asked.
