Photos of Friends and Family - 1917 - pages 76-79

 I'm very lucky to have several of my grandmother Evelyn Clara Call's (1895-1962) photo albums. And perhaps even luckier that she labeled many of the photos - so I know roughly when and where they were taken, and who was in the photos. 

My grandmother attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1915-1916, and then Cornell University in Ithaca, New York from 1916-1919.

Page 76 has photographs of Evelyn Clara Call and her friends including Ruth Covell

Ruth Phyllis Covell (1916-2013) daughter of Ruth Edna Cole (1893-1969) and Albert Henry Covell (1890-1975). Her parents were married in Le Roy, Genesee County, New York in 1915. 


Winifred    Ruth   Evelyn

Ruth Edna Cole (1893-1969) daughter of Winfield William Cole (1859-1931) and Bessie Smith (1864-1956). She married Albert Henry Covell (1890-1975) in 1915. Census records for 1900 and 1910 have the Cole family living in Le Roy

Edith Alberta Call (1889-1989) daughter of Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939) and Elizabeth Ann Coe (1862-1956). She married Malvern Smith Jones in 1913.

Bernice Reynolds - Bernice C. Reynolds (1896-1973) graduated from Cornell in 1920 with a degree in Agriculture. She was the daughter of Charles John Reynolds and Mary Ella Wilder. She married Fred Eugene Wheeler.

Probably the family of David G. Boyd (1874-1943) and Corrine Parrow (1874-1979). In 1920, they were living in Pembroke, Genesee County, New York. And of the Boyd families in the area - they were the only ones with a group of boys including ones that could be twins (on left in top photo). Their children were Niles (1896-1938), Louise (1897-1955), Amy (1899-1974), Ralph (1901-1929), Josephine (1902-1992), David (1906-1982), George (1907-1971), Harvey (1908-1990), Harlan (1908-1973) and Ruby (1912-1998)

The top photo could be David, George, Harvey and Harlan.
The lower photo could David, George, Harvey, Harlan, Ruby, and some of the older children.

   I recently received a set of recipe cards from a cousin that were written by out grandmother Evelyn Clara (Call) Hankins, probably between 1920 (when she married) and 1962 (when she died). My grandmother was born in Wichita, Sedgewick, Kansas in 1895. Within a few months of her birth, the family moved back to Stafford, Genesee County, New York where her parents, Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939) and Elizabeth Ann Coe (1862-1956) were born. Evelyn lived in Stafford on the family farm until she left for college, first at Northwestern University in Chicago and then at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. She graduated from Cornell in 1919 with a degree in Home Economics. After graduating, she worked for a year at Wells College in Aurora, Cayuga, New York, possibly as the Superintendent of a Dormitory, as a housekeeper or as a teacher.   The fifteenth photo in the album is Mary Ellen (Ross) Hankins (1835-1914), wife of Lucas Wurtz Hankins.  Mary Ellen Ross was born 25 August 1835 in Pennsylvania, the daughter of John Ross (1791-1837) and Sarah Kellam (1797-after 1850). She married Lucas Wurtz Hankins (1831-1910), son of John Hankins (1803-1847) and Susan Thomas (1811-1885) on 5 August 1857 at the home of Benjamin Tyler. Lucas and Mary Ellen had three children: Laura Ardella (1858-1859) Howard Ross (1863-1922) married first Emma M. Chappins, second Martha M Hanning William Lucas (1872-1930) married Mary Jane Kellam Mary Ellen (Ross) Hankins died on 16 April 1914 at Auburn, Cayuga County, New York, and is buried in Hillside Cemetery, Damascus, Wayne County.  About the  Hankins/Ross Photo Album Previous Photo in the Album:  Lucas Wurtz Hankins Next Photograph in the Album: John Ralph Hankins

Adding a Citation to a Document using Photoshop Elements 2023

This is the first is an occasional series of blog posts on using Photoshop Elements 2023 for genealogists. Many of my genealogist friends know I'm also a photographer, so have asked me how I do some things with genealogy-related images. The problem is - I use Photoshop and Lightroom - which are probably overkill for most genealogists, and are a subscription-based package. I used to recommend Irfanview (and still do for some things) but I was finding it hard to do some of what I do in Photoshop in Irfanview.  So enter Photoshop Elements 2023 - it has more features than Irfanview but isn't as user-hostile as Photoshop can be. And it's available for purchase as a stand-alone package - no monthly subscription fees!
