James Daniel McEwen - mid 1880s - page 13 of of Charles Joslin Call and Elizabeth Ann Coe's photograph album

The eleventh photo in the album is of James Daniel McEwen (1861-1901), Elizabeth Coe's brother-in-law.

James Daniel McEwen was born on 7 February 1861 in Le Roy, Genesee County, New York, the son of Donald McEwen (1819-1911) and Hannah Heagle (1833-1923).

He married Clara Addie Coe (1864-1950), daughter of Albert Coe (1827-1907) and Deborah Prentice (1833-1910) on 29 October 1890 in Le Roy, Genesee County.

James McEwen settled in Wichita, Sedgewick, Kansas in about 1889. By 1891, he was the owner of J.D. McEwen & Co., Commission Merchants. Starting in 1894, his business was focused on wholesale fruit and produce.

James and Clara McEwen had two sons, Harold Daniel (1892-1963) and John Donald (1897-1984).

James McEwen died in Wichita on 4 August 1901.

James' widow, Clara Addie Coe McEwen, remained in Wichita for the rest of her life. Both she and her husband are buried in Machpelah Cemetery in Le Roy, Genesee County, New York.

The style of the card - type of photograph, type of cardstock, border, etc indicate the photograph could have been taken anytime between 1870 and 1900.

The photographer, Levi Sherman (1834-1901) was active in Rochester between 1875 and 1896. Between 1881 and 1888, his studio was located at 40 State Street in Rochester, the address on the back of the card.

The style of the card is the same as the photograph of Ezra Frank Coe that I've dated to about 1883. It is possible this photograph was created at the same time, or that the photographer used the same style of card for several years.

So the photograph was probably taken sometime in the mid-1880s.
