Clara and Albert Coe - c 1892-1893 - page 22 of Charles Joslin Call and Elizabeth Ann Coe's Photo Album

The eighteenth photo in the album is Clara Evelyn Coe and her brother Charles Albert Coe, children of Ezra Frank Coe, niece and nephew of Elizabeth Ann Coe.

Clara Evelyn Coe was born on 30 December 1886 in Hiawatha, Brown County, Kansas, the daughter of Ezra Frank Coe (1853-1942) and Sarah Frances Ward (1856-1942).

She married Ward Coe Bryant (1881-1975), son of Frank E. Bryant (1858-1944) and Eva S. Coe (1860-1949) on 30 August 1906 at the home of her grandparents Albert Coe and Deborah Prentice in Le Roy, Genesee County, New York. Clara Evelyn Coe and her husband were third cousins, sharing Jesse Coe (1769-1843) and Olive Roberts (1880-1854) as their great great grandparents.

Clara Evelyn Coe and her husband Ward Coe Bryant had four children: Frank Ruddy (1907-1934), Charles Warren (1909-1960), Frederick Ward (1913-1991) and Janet Elizabeth (1921-2006). The Bryant family settled in Greenfield, Franklin County, Massachusetts by 1909, where Ward Coe Bryant was an osteopathic physician.

Clara Evelyn Coe died on 16 October 1972 in Greenfield. Her husband died there on 28 July 1975.

Her brother, Charles Albert Coe, was born on 15 January 1890 in Denver, Adams County, Colorado.

On 9 April 1911, he married Estrealla Louise Monighan (1890-1956), daughter of James Monighan and Sarah Green in Geneva, Monroe County, New York. They divorced between 1930 and 1940, and had no children.

On 28 November 1940, he married Elvira Arndt (1902-1986), daughter William Arndt and Alvina Wendt in Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida. They also had no children.

Charles Albert Coe died on 30 July 1978 in Orange County, Florida.

This photograph likely dates from between 1892-1893.

The centered monogram with the large cursive text on the photographer's imprint would date the photograph from 1889-1894. The card style of straight cut edges, no border and coated cardstock would date the photograph from between 1888-1900.

The two photographs of Harold Daniel McEwen on pages 18 and 19 of the album were printed on similar photo card stock with the same logo. Those photos date from c1892-1894.

The photograph was taken at Baldwin & Son photography studio in Wichita. Nereus Baldwin (1840-1901) established his Wichita photography studio by 1878. By 1885, his son Frederick William (1866-1913) has joined him in the business.

By 1892, the studio was located at 118 E. Douglas Avenue in Wichita. The Baldwin & Son studio was listed in the city directories until 1900. Between 1902-1904, Fred W Baldwin as listed as a photographer. In 1906, Mrs Moscelen Coffman and Alwinda Bullock were listed as owners of the Baldwin Studio at 118 E. Douglas Avenue.

The 1892-1894 dates are also consistent with the known residences of Ezra Frank Coe and his family. In 1886, the family lived in Hiawatha, Brown County, Kansas where Clara was born. By 1890,  they lived in Denver, Adams County, Colorado where Charles Albert was born. The family was in Wichita, Sedgewick County, Kansas in time for Ezra Frank to be listed in the 1892 city directory. He was also listed in the city directories in 1894 and 1896. By 1898, he was no longer listed in the Wichita city directory. By 1900, Ezra Frank and his family were living in Le Roy, Genesee County, New York, next door to his parents.

The 1892-1894 dates also are consistent with the ages of the children in photos. In 1892, Clara would have been 6 years old, while Albert would have been 2. In 1894, Clara would have been 8 years old, while Albert would have been 4. Looking at the photo, the children look closer to 6 and 2 than 8 and 4, indicating the photo was probably taken closer to 1892 than 1894.
