John Donald McEwen - c 1897 - page 23 of Charles Joslin Call and Elizabeth Ann Coe's Photo Album



  

The nineteenth photo in the album is John Donald McEwen, son of Clara Addie (Coe) McEwen, nephew of Elizabeth Ann Coe. 

John Donald McEwen was born on Easter Sunday, 18 April 1897, in Wichita, Sedgewick County, Kansas, the son of James Daniel McEwen and Clara Addie Coe. 

He married Bernice Beachy (1892-1945) daughter of Cyrus M. Beachy (1862-1945) and Anna Olinger (1864-1955) on 17 April 1917 in Wichita. John and Bernice had two children Own Coe McEwen (1924-2012) and Ellen McEwen (1928-2014). 

From about 1918 through at least 1940, John worked at Steffen Bretch Ice and Ice Cream Company in Wichita. In 1920, he was an accountant there. By 1930, he was a manager. And by 1940, he was a Bice President of the firm. 

Before 1952, John married Charlotte German (1908-1997), daughter of James Lafayette German (1879-1952) and Eunice Scott (1855-1946). 

John Donald McEwen died on 3 March 1984. He is buried in Wichita. 





This photograph dates from 1897, the year John was born. Interestingly, on the back, in addition to his name, someone noted that he was born on Easter Sunday. 

The photographer was Clifford E. Sawyer (1866-1914). At the time, the photo was taken, his studio located at 112 East Douglas Street in Wichita.

"Clifford, known as "Doc" Sawyer, was a professional photographer in Wichita. In July 1889, Sawyer was working with Rogers in his gallery. In November 1889, Sawyer partnered with photographer J. G. Brittingham in a photographic studio at 112 East Douglas over Mosbacher's Store. In 1895, Sawyer served as the treasurer for the newly formed Kansas Photographer's Association. In 1898, C. E. won first and second place prized in the Kansas Photographer's contest for the fourth year in a row. In 1898, Frank Kensler joined his studio as a photographer. In 1902, Frank opened a branch of the studio in Kiowa, Barber County, Kansas. In November 1899, Sawyer won the best in show at the Texas State Photographers show"
